Probably the first playable instrument I ever built, nice!
This was a low-stress prototype to see if the neck-through construction I had in mind for nicer instruments would work. I designed specifically so I could build it out of a 24" boards, so it’s a bit stout. It’s all basswood. Soft stuff! I probably cut this whole thing out with a coping saw.
The neck is five layers. The headstock has a neat little swoop carved into it. I wonder why there aren’t more interesting headstocks.
The body is also five layers. The top layer covers up the neck laminations, but you can see them from the back.
The fretboard and nut and bridge are maple.
The tailpiece is a thing I designed in OpenSCAD and had 3D printed out of steel.
The tuners are the cheapest thing I could find.
The pickup is weird, some kind of short single coil thing, maybe knockoff P-bass pickup? The business end is about 2+7/16" long. Not sure where I got it.
Honestly, it plays okay! The volute is too far into the neck, but hey.
