I built this basically to see how fast I could make a lap steel.
It’s an oak 1×3 left over from some window trim. It’s thin! It bends a bit under string tension, but not too much. The weak spot is the pickup route—I spent a long time looking for the thinnest, narrowest pickup with the widest string spacing and landed on this Filtertron copy.
The fretboard is a pour of epoxy resin and white mica powder.
The fret outlines themselves I laid out in OpenSCAD and had printed on a vinyl window sticker.
The nut and bridge are aluminum.
